Man charged with Government House attack
A man has been charged after allegedly jumping a fence at Governor's House in Adelaide before attacking a security guard.
Police were patrolling the area on Thursday when they allegedly saw a man jump the King Willian Rd fence about 11.30pm.
With assistance from local patrols, police security officers set up cordons around the grounds and began searching for the man.
A short time later, the man was allegedly located lying in a garden bed alongside the southern wall of the official residence.
Police security directed the man to leave the grounds, but allege that while being escorted the man became argumentative.
Officers allege the man then turned around and struck a police security officer causing injury to his eye, nose, and the side of his face.
Other patrols in the area rushed to the assistance of police security before the man was arrested without further incident.
The 30-year-old Melbourne man has since been charged with unlawfully being on a premises and assaulting an emergency worker.
He will remain behind bars on remand after being refused bail to appear before Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.
The police security officer was taken to hospital where he remains while awaiting scans to confirm the extent of his injuries.
Government House in South Australia is the official residence of the state’s governor, Frances Adamson AC.
The residence is the oldest public building in the state and is the oldest Government House in Australia.
