Shocking video shows man armed with knives chase cops after road rage attack

A man has been charged after allegedly stabbing two police officers who confronted him over a road rage attack in NSW.

The 25-year-old allegedly slashed a vehicle's tyre with a knife at the intersection of The Boulevarde and Carey St, Toronto, Lake Macquarie, around 1pm on Sunday.

Witnesses reported the act and police allege that when officers confronted the man at a nearby service station, he was armed with two knives and attacked them.

Terrifying amateur footage of the incident shows a police officer fleeing the armed suspect at the petrol station as police fail to subdue the man.

The officer sprints away as the man quickly follows.

"The two senior constables used OC spray and a baton in an attempt to disarm the man, however, both suffered stab wounds – one to the leg and the other to the hand," a police statement said.

Officers fired shots in a bid to deter the man and were eventually able to detain him with the help of bystanders, who were praised by senior police.

"Those members of the public that came forward with no regard for their own safety, helped out just a couple of blokes doing their job," Superintendent Danny Sullivan told reporters on Sunday.

Supt Sullivan said he was "exceptionally proud" of the two officers and "the courage they displayed".

Both officers were taken to hospital in a stable condition, and one has since been released.

The Bronte man is due to appear in the Newcastle Local Court on Monday charged with two counts of wounding with intent to resist arrest, destroy/damage property, common assault, and breach of bail for drug-related offences.
