Man’s bold act after allegedly stealing taxi
A driver has been charged after he allegedly stole a taxi and was caught waiting in a McDonald’s drive thru.
The man had hailed the taxi on King William St in Adelaide’s CBD in the early hours of Sunday morning.
He asked the driver to take him to Hindley St about 4am before getting inside.
South Australia Police said the man allegedly punched the male driver once inside the cab and forced him out of the car.
The taxi was tracked using its GPS to Main North Rd at Parooka, where the alleged thief was caught in the McDonald’s drive thru line waiting to order.
Police blocked the vehicle in before arresting the 36-year-old man.
He was charged with illegal use, assault and property damage.
The man was refused bail and is expected to appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday.
SA Taxi Council president John Trainer slammed the alleged attack.
“This is (allegedly) another disgusting mongrel act against someone who is very vulnerable out there, on their own working in the early hours of the morning, providing a public service,” Mr Trainer told 9 News.
“You will be caught, there is a security camera watching you in the car and recording everything and you have satellite navigation that will follow the car.”
