Man who appeared in alleged sex tape with Mimi Macpherson found dead

A man who appeared in a sex tape allegedly with Elle Macpherson’s sister Mimi has been found dead in Thailand.

Matthew Bennett, 59, was part of a family that ran an Australian clothing empire, the Bennett Apparel Group, which spanned five generations.

It is understood Mr Bennett had been living in Thailand for about eight years, establishing headquarters for the company in Bangkok.

In the late 1990s Mr Bennett made headlines after he released a secretly filmed video of himself having sex with a woman in a Sydney hotel suite.

It was alleged that Mimi Macpherson, who runs a whale-watching tourism business, was the woman in the video, although her family denied the claim.

The story first appeared in the UK’s Sunday Mirror. In 1997, Mr Bennett admitted to The Sun Herald that he had made the video but never intended it to be circulated.

He said he was friend with Ms Macpherson and she “didn’t deserve” the intense speculation about the video.

After the controversy he moved to Thailand.

Ragtrader, a fashion industry trade magazine, described Mr Bennett in 2011 as the “director of the manufacturing and importing business Bennett Clothing.”

The circumstances in which Bennett died have not been confirmed but The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was “providing consular assistance, in accordance with the Consular Services Charter, to the family of an Australian man who died in Thailand.”
