When officers approached the vehicle, police allege the man got out of his car armed with a loaded revolver.

Gold Coast Police Inspector Kayleen James said the attending officers tried to speak to the man, but he was “clearly agitated at the time”.

Inspector James said the man produced a firearm and grabbed a female officer while also threatening other officers with the gun at the time.

The man then released the female officer before he fled to a nearby street while trying to steal a number of vehicles, according to police.

Inspector James said when the man was unable to get into any of the cars, he approached a taxi driver to take him before he was arrested.

“He struggled with police and was immediately taken into custody,” Inspector James said.

“Despite there being no physical injury to the man or the police officers, the female officer was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital for further tests.”

Inspector James said the officers’ actions ensured nobody was injured during the “volatile” incident.

“I’m very proud of the officers’ actions today,” she said.

“It was a very confronting situation and they handled it with great experience and knowledge which prevented both themselves getting injured and members of the public.

“These situations can be potentially very volatile but we rely on our officers and rely on their training.

“It’s very concerning but police are trained with dealing with these types of situations and they were able to subdue the man very quickly.”
