A man accused of killing his roommate during a fight at their home in Perth’s northern suburbs will go to trial.

Samuel Dudley Smart, appearing via video link from Hakea Prison, pleaded not guilty to one charge of murder in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

WA Police say Mr Smart, 27, seriously wounded his 47-year-old housemate in their unit on Alexander Drive, Yokine, on the night of January 14.

The pair had apparently been fighting when the older man was fatally injured.

Police said Mr Smart left the property and the older man died of his injuries before another flatmate found his body hours later.

Mr Smart was arrested two days later.

His first appearance in the WA Supreme Court was set for December 4, meaning he won’t be going to trial until some time in 2024.

He remains remanded in custody until then.
