'Golden boy', 20, falls to death while taking selfie on school roof

A young man has died after he climbed onto the roof at his old school to take a selfie and fell through it to his death.

The tragic accident took place in Florence in the Italian region of Tuscany after a night out.

Roberto Frezza, 20, was rescued from the school grounds in a state of unconsciousness at around 4am on Sunday, January 23.

He was taken to the Careggi University Hospital in a critical condition but sadly passed away later that night.

According to the newspaper La Nazione, Mr Frezza and a friend scaled the school's front gate because he wanted to show his mate where he had gone to school.

However he fell through the roof over a fire escape after reportedly making his way up there to take a selfie.

The selfie-gone-wrong hypothesis is currently considered the most likely cause of death, as the deceased man's mobile phone was found on the roof.

It was the friend who raised the alarm with emergency responders after calling for Mr Frezza in the dark and hearing no reply. He later found his body on the ground.

The police have questioned the friend, who has not been fully named in public reports, as a witness and may question him again, according to local reports.

Roberto was described as a "golden boy". He studied engineering and loved football, playing for amateur side Gallianese and supporting Fiorentina.

The police investigation is ongoing.
