Major turn in blogger’s triple-fatal crash case

An Italian travel blogger who allegedly caused the death of three members of the same family in a horror triple fatal car crash last year must wait another month before confronting his final charges, with the case pushed back as prosecutors review crucial crash reconstruction reports.

Gabriele Cairo, 28, appeared at Adelaide Magistrates Court on Tuesday before Magistrate Brian Nitschke for a charge determination hearing, but prosecutors asked for a five-week adjournment to review a technical reconstruction report and then determine how to proceed against Mr Cairo.

The police have charged the young Italian with three counts of cause death by dangerous driving and one count of cause serious harm by dangerous driving after he allegedly collided with a Honda Civic carrying John, Cynthia and daughter Jacquie Clarke at a rural intersection in the state’s Mid North region on October 31, 2023.

Cynthia, 84, and Jacquie, 54, died at the scene of the Everard Central crash and husband and father John Clarke, 86, who was in the rear of the Honda, suffered critical injuries.

Paramedics flew him to Royal Adelaide Hospital for further treatment but he died from his injuries days later.

Mr Cairo’s wife, Elena Perrone, was in the van with him and suffered critical injuries in the crash, but survived.

She appeared in court alongside her husband on Tuesday and wept softly as they left the court together.

An Italian interpreter dialled in via videolink to translate proceedings for Mr Cairo.

The Italian tourists were on holiday together at the time of the crash.

The pair hosted a YouTube channel documenting their travels, including videos from the Pyramids in Egypt and visiting the palatial Venetian Resort in Las Vegas.

Ms Clarke, a retired nurse, and John were both beloved patrons of the Snowtown golf club before the couple moved to Clare.

Jacquie lived in Jamestown, a 50-minute drive from Clare.

Mr Cairo will return to court on April 30.
