London weather: Capital set for scorching start to summer with temperatures to reach mid-20s
Londoners are set to enjoy a scorching start to summer with temperatures tipped to climb into the mid 20s centigrade next week.
The Met Office is forecasting a jump in temperatures as summer officially starts on Thursday, June 1, with peak temperatures during the week not expected to dip below 23C.
Rachel Ayers, a senior meteorologist at the UK’s national weather service, said: “The warm weather . . . is due to high pressure bringing fine and bright weather across the UK and with the high-pressure system currently centred to the west of the UK.
“It is likely we will see a new warmest day of the year so far this week as we go into the last full week of meteorological spring.”
The Met Office, added: “There is a consistent signal for above-average temperatures at least into the start of June.
“Temperatures should be above average for most. Feeling warm away from windward eastern coasts, perhaps very warm for the south. Into early June, with the focus of high pressure shifting north, there is an increased chance of more unsettled conditions in the south of the UK. This brings the chance of heavy, thundery showers or longer spells of rain here.”
On its outlook for London for the second half of this week, the BBC Weather page says: “There will be long periods of sunshine, along with some areas of cloud sweeping in from the north and north-west at times, but it should remain dry.”
Britons witnessed the warmest day of the year so far on Sunday, with north Wales seeing temperatures reach a scorching 23C.
