There are grave concerns for the welfare of a child believed to have been taken by a crocodile in a remote community.
Police received reports of a missing 12-year-old about 5.30pm on Tuesday near the community of Palumpa, about 360km southwest of Darwin.
The child was last seen swimming at Mango Creek with reports indicating the child had been attacked by a crocodile, NT police said.
Local police and community members began searching the area on Tuesday with a search and rescue team deployed.

Warning about egg prices as bird flu spreads
A supermarket boss has warned Aussies will likely be forced to pay more for eggs in the coming weeks due to shortages linked to bird flu.
Two of Australia’s biggest supermarket chains, Woolworths and Coles, limited the number of egg cartons customers can purchase across most of Australia’s east coast as the industry continues to be hit by a deadly strain of bird flu.
Woolworths has had a two-pack limit per person for customers in NSW, the ACT and Victoria since Thursday.
Coles has restricted customers to two cartons each at all stores except in Western Australia since early June.
Ritchies IGA has already experienced a 10 to 20 per cent increase in demand, chief executive Fred Harrison said, and the supermarket will introduce buying limits in Victoria from Wednesday.
“Our egg supplier in Victoria met with us and said they are now starting to run a bit short,” he told NewsWire.
“There definitely will be price increases coming through,” he said.
US President Joe Biden has tried to offer an explanation for his concerning performance at last week's presidential debate, saying he was so tired he "almost fell asleep onstage".
Biden repeatedly lacked clarity throughout the debate with Donald Trump and the 81-year-old has now tried to clarify why that was.
Alongside having what his team said was a cold, Biden says he "wasn't very smart" to travel around the world in the days leading up to the debate.
"I didn't listen to my staff… and then I almost fell asleep onstage. It's not an excuse but an explanation," he said.

Jay Slater's mum issues statement about missing son
The mother of missing British teen Jay Slater has issued a statement about her son days after police called off their search.
There has been no trace of the 19-year-old after he was last seen 40km from his accomodation after attending a music festival on the Spanish island of Tenerife.
His disappearance has gripped the UK and millions more around the world, with the intense interest triggering a slew of conspiracies about the teen's disappearance two weeks ago.

His mother Debbie Duncan has now released a statement through the British overseas missing persons charity LBT Global, speaking of her family's heartbreak.
"Jay is a normal guy who is in his 3rd year of an apprenticeship, and he is a very popular young man with a large circle of friends,' she said.
"We are a very close family and are absolutely devastated about his disappearance. Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are experiencing. He is our beautiful boy with his whole life ahead of him and we just want to find him."
She thanked Spanish police for their efforts during their 12-day search and called conspiracies being spread online about her son "vile".

Covid subvariant likely to send cases 'skyrocketing' in Australia
A highly transmissible Covid subvariant is “taking off” in Australia and will likely produce a bulge in new cases, disease experts warn.
The FLuQE subvariant is ripping through the US, and University of South Australia biostatistician Adrian Esterman said the mutation would hit Australians in just a few weeks.
“It might take another few weeks to hit us, but it will,” he told NewsWire on Wednesday.
“It’s really starting to take off and in America, it’s starting to skyrocket.”
The FLuQE subvariant mutated from the FLiRT variant that hit Australia at the end of last year and in early 2024.
Professor Esterman said FLiRT was “almost certainly” responsible for a bulge in Covid cases across May.
In South Australia alone, new weekly Covid cases rose from 924 on April 17 to 2394 on May 22 before falling back to 980 on June 19.

Stolen 1.5m gorilla returned to Melbourne retirement home
A stolen 1.5m gorilla statue named Garry is to be returned to a retirement home following a police search from the sky.
The much-loved primate was taken from the St Helena community in Melbourne’s northeast last month.
Following extensive inquiries into Garry’s disappearance, police homed in on a Reservoir property before calling in the Air Wing to conduct a fly over of the residence.
Police confirmed the “pilots went absolutely bananas” when they spotted Garry the gorilla perched between two garages.

Troubling poll results for Biden
A Yahoo US poll has revealed how support for President Joe Biden is waning following a disastrous first debate with Donald Trump.
The 81-year-old's weak performance, plagued by incoherent responses, has seen the perception he is unfit for office worsen.
Just 24 per cent of people now believe he is fit for office, a figure that dropped significantly after the debate. On the other hand, Trump enjoyed a sharp rise up to 43 per cent.
Just 24 per cent of respondents think Biden is fit for another term.

ABC News Breakfast host Lisa Millar has announced live on-air she is quitting the morning show.
She described her five-year stint as the most "exciting and fun" stage of her long career.
Millar guided millions of viewers through uncertain times during the Covid-19 pandemic however faced online abuse from some viewers about her appearance as well as an alleged political bias.

Greg Lynn attacked in prison
Convicted murderer Greg Lynn has been attacked in prison less than a week after he was found guilty of one count of murder.
Human faeces was thrown at Lynn by a fellow inmate at the Melbourne Assessment Prison last week, Channel 7 reports.
Lynn, 57, was found guilty of murdering Carol Clay, 73, when a jury returned its verdict in Melbourne last week.

He was found not guilty of the murder of 74-year-old Russell Hill.
Lynn is being held in the Melbourne Assessment Prison ahead of sentencing, where he was allegedly attacked.
Channel 7 reports an inmate who knows Ms Clay’s family asked another inmate to conduct the attack.
The 57-year-old is being held in a protection unit in the prison where he can mix with other inmates.
