Little girl, 1, sole survivor of horrific car crash that killed family

A one-year-old girl is being called “a miracle” after she survived a fatal highway crash that killed five people including both her parents, young brother and uncle.

Isabella Garcia was the sole survivor of the crash near Houston, in the US state of Texas, on Monday when an SUV veered into oncoming traffic across a grassed median and struck their Nissan sedan, police say.

Her 24-year-old pregnant mother, Dominique Ramirez, was found dead at the scene alongside Isabella’s father Daniel Garcia, 25, and his 21-year-old brother, Fernando Garcia.

Isabella’s two-year-old brother Isaac died in hospital.

The driver of the SUV also died during the head-on collision in Wharton, 60km southwest of Houston.

He has been identified as 37-year-old Jose Magallon.

Isabella’s emotional uncle Andres Garcia told US news station KTRK he never thought his family could ever face such a tragedy.

"I wish I could hug them, I could hold them one more time," he said through tears.

Andres said he must now stay strong for Isabella.

“What's keeping me sane is the baby... she is a miracle,” he said.

Isabella remains in Texas Children’s Hospital, with doctors telling Andres she is recovering well from the crash.

He has since set up a GoFundMe to support his family in the wake of the deaths. At the time of writing, more than US$23,000 (AU$31,000) had been raised so far.

Police investigations into the crash continue. Mr Garcia said investigators told him Mr Magallon’s vehicle may have aquaplaned prior to the crash.

Everyone inside the family’s vehicle were wearing seatbelts while the children were strapped in car seats, the Houston Chronicle reported citing a police report.
