Mufasa: The Lion King is coming to cinemas this Christmas, and we now have the first trailer for the prequel movie.

The trailer was debuted today (April 29) on Good Morning America, which airs on Disney-owned network ABC, giving us the best look yet at the new movie which delves into Mufasa's past.

Mufasa: The Lion King sees Rafiki tell the legend of Mufasa to Simba and Nala's daughter Kiara. Told in flashbacks, the movie will introduce Mufasa as an orphaned cub who meets a sympathetic lion named Taka, the heir to a royal bloodline, AKA Scar.

Their meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of a group of misfits searching for their destiny as they work together to evade a threatening foe.

The Underground Railroad and Old actor Aaron Pierre voices young Mufasa, while Elvis actor Kelvin Harrison Jr plays Taka. Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, and John Kani are returning to voice Timon, Pumbaa, and Rafiki respectively.

It doesn't seem as though James Earl Jones has returned to reprise his role as the older Mufasa as his name is missing from the official cast list.

In 2022, the legendary actor was reported to have said that he was looking to wind things down, especially when it came to voicing Darth Vader, and had given Disney his permission to use AI and their library of his recordings going forward.

The movie will though feature the movie debut of Blue Ivy Carter as Kiara, as well as Mads Mikkelsen as formidable lion Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Taka's mother Eshe and Lennie James as Taka's father Obasi.

Mufasa has been directed by Barry Jenkins, taking over from the remake's director Jon Favreau. The film serves as a reunion for Jenkins and Pierre, as Jenkins previously helmed The Underground Railroad.

Disney has slowed down with its live-action remakes a little bit recently, but still has Snow White set for next year, Moana scheduled for 2026, and projects like Lilo & Stitch, Hercules, and a few others in the pipeline.

Mufasa: The Lion King will be released in cinemas on December 20.
