Floodwaters caused by a huge storm smashed through dams and washed away entire neighborhoods in Libya. Ambulance authorities confirmed at least 2,300 people had died in Derna, the worst affected city. The Red Crescent said about 10,000 people are reported missing, and it was feared the death toll could surpass 5,000.
It wasn't until Tuesday more than 36 hours after Storm Daniel struck on Sunday night that outside help was able to reach Derna. When the storm hit the coast, residents reportedly heard loud explosions and realized that dams outside the city had collapsed unleashing flash floods. According to Reuters, Turkey and other countries have rushed aid to Libya including search and rescue vehicles, rescue boats, generators, and food.
