Victim's chilling final post before fatal outback plane crash
Just hours before her plane fatally crashed, killing Rachel Whitford and her pilot, the mother-of-five posted an eerie picture to Facebook thanking her pilot for “another safe landing”.
Stud farm owner Peter Gesler, 59, of Greymare, and Ms Whitford, 48, of Brisbane died when the Brumby 610 aircraft crashed on Saturday, north of Leigh Creek, in outback South Australia.
The pair had taken off from William Creek about 4pm before crashing in scrubland on approach to the Leigh Creek airport, police say.
Pictures from the scene showed the mangled wreckage on flat scrubland, with only the aircraft's tail remaining intact. But just hours earlier, Ms Whitford shared an eerie picture of the aircraft as it refuelled.
"Grateful for another safe landing and my cautious pilot!" she wrote from Marree.
The Facebook post revealed she had been airsick that afternoon.
"Refuelling Pete's plane and so [have] to say I have my peppermint oil and copaiba oil on hand to rub on. It has helped me through a severe bout of travel [sickness] when I could not keep anything down," she added.
Fatal SA plane crash investigation resumes
Two investigators from Recreational Aviation Australia were at the site, 560km north of Adelaide, on Monday.
CEO Michael Linke said there was currently no information available regarding the aircraft, purpose of the flight or cause of the crash.
"Our investigation will consider environmental, mechanical and human factors," he said.
"We will work with the local police as subject matter experts and provide them with a report in due course."
SA police is also investigating, with a report to be prepared for the coroner.
