Law student, 21, killed after being hit by jet ski

This young student has died five months after being hit by a jet ski in a tragic accident on a Brazilian river.

Law student Gabriela Vanessa Nery, 21, and a friend were hit by a jet ski operated by an unnamed man on the Candeias River in the Brazilian state of Rondonia on July 11.

Both women were knocked unconscious and a witness dived into the water and dragged them onto a boat where he performed CPR.

By the time the emergency services arrived, the women were conscious, but Gabriela had reportedly suffered multiple fractures and cuts and required urgent medical care.

She was taken to the Hospital Joao Paulo II while her friend was transferred to a medical centre in the town of Candeias do Jamari with less severe injuries.

Gabriela was eventually transferred to the ICU of a hospital in the city of Porto Velho where she spent the next five months until passing away on Tuesday, December 14.

The state Department of Health (Sesau) confirmed the young woman’s passing on Wednesday (local time), adding that her cause of death was due to the multiple fractures she suffered in the river accident.

In July, it was reported that Gabriela lost movement in her legs and arms because of a fracture to her C5 vertebra, and she underwent several surgeries including spinal fixation.

Following Gabriela’s passing, her friend Flavia Ferreira wrote on social media: “May God keep you in a good place, my friend. You fought hard for your life, God knows everything. Now you are resting in a better place. One day we will meet again. You were the best person, God comfort your family’s hearts.”
