L-plater's terrifying crash during first drive on highway with his father

A young learner driver has had a rude awakening to the dangers on the roads after he veered into an embankment in regional NSW.

Dramatic footage shows the moment the novice motorist lost control of his 4WD along the Great Western Highway near Meadow Flat on Sunday.

The blue ute can be seen driving along in the left lane before swerving into the right and veering back to the left.

The ute leaves the road and grinds to a halt in a ditch beside the embankment.

The motorist behind the ute managed to capture the incident on camera before sharing it with Dash Cam Owners Australia who posted it online on Monday.

The driver, who pulled over to check on the crashed vehicle, revealed the young driver revealed he’d lost concentration after paying attention to a nearby red car.

The inexperienced driver, who was with his father, accidentally clipped a patch of dirt and lost control.

While the L-plater and his father escaped injury, the assisting driver said the incident “scared the absolute living daylights out of the poor kid”.

“He was literally in tears after the event from the shock,” they said.

The driver said the father revealed it was the first time on a highway for his son who didn’t have much experience on the roads.

Police attended the scene after a patrol car spotted the vehicle when passing in the opposite direction.

Officers decided not to take any further action after reviewing the dashcam footage.

The driver said police told the L-plater the incident would be a “good learning experience”.
