Kristen Wiig’s Target Lady from “SNL” returns in new commercial campaign
Wiig’s promotion of "Terget" brings a decades-old character full circle.
Target Lady has returned — and you’ll never guess what store she’s promoting.
Kristen Wiig is back in the iconic bowl-cut wiig to reprise one of her most iconic Saturday Night Live characters in a new series of commercials for Target.
Target Lady was one of Wiig’s most beloved — and one of her most frequently recurring — sketches from her seven-year SNL tenure. The chaotic character always alienated her customers and co-workers with her bizarre enthusiasm for “Terget,” as she pronounces it, and utilized Wiig’s penchant for goofy voices, cartoonish facial expressions, and rattling off meandering, outlandish dialogue.
The commercials reunite Wiig with former SNL writer James Anderson, and see Target Lady unsurprisingly thrilled to find new deals at the store (she also talks to a bird and calls a customer Abe Lincoln in the first two of 12 commercials).
The ads are promoting the launch of Target Circle Week, which will last from April 7 to 13 and encourage shoppers to join Target Circle, the store’s free rewards program, as well as Target Circle 360, a subscription-based program that will provide same-day shipping for shoppers.
"Target Lady is incredibly special to me because it's one of the characters I created at The Groundlings and ended up on SNL. She definitely loves Target! I mean, who doesn't?" Wiig said in a press release. "It was so fun to bring her back after all this time, and we had so much fun imagining the world Target Lady sees inside the store today."
The announcement comes the same week that Wiig is set to host SNL for the fifth time, this time with musical guest Raye.
Wiig’s Target Lady will continue to promote the company in commercials advertising Target’s services after the conclusion of Target Circle Week.
Wiig also currently stars in Apple TV+’s dramedy series Palm Royale alongside Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, Allison Janney, and Josh Lucas.
