Kangaroos appear to defy gravity on lake in photographer's remarkable 'shot of a lifetime'

The photographer had packed up and was about to go home, when his wife urged him to turn around after spotting the mob of kangaroos.

An Aussie photographer has landed “the shot of a lifetime” showing kangaroos appearing to defy gravity and hop across a lake.

Retiree Wayne Suffield was about to head home. He’d been sitting by remote Lake Buninjon, northwest of Melbourne, snapping images of local and migratory birds with his wife.

“We’d been there for about an hour and a half and we were calling it quits. We’d actually packed up and I’d turned my back and Francesca said, have a look at that,” Suffield told Yahoo News Australia.

Reflecting on the moment the mob of eastern greys hopped across the shallows, Suffield described it as “pretty remarkable”. “The bird life was just flying into the air, they were getting out of the way of the kangaroos,” he said.

Wildlife lovers gush over amazing kangaroo photograph

Since an image of the kangaroos was posted online, wildlife lovers have been in awe of Suffield’s good fortune to witness the encounter. “Great timing to see this scene unfold,” one person wrote. “That's an amazing photo. A one-time photo opportunity,” another gushed.

While he’s seen plenty of snakes and rabbits around the reserve, Friday was the first time Suffield had ever seen kangaroos hope across the lake. There had been a little rain earlier in the week, causing the water level to rise above the mud and obscure a sliver of land that connects the mainland with a small island.

“It was certainly very spectacular and I was very grateful to get the shot,” he said. “We've posted a few sites and people were very enthusiastic and have had quite a bit to say about it. There was a lot of people who thought they were being chased by dogs. But that's just not true. They weren't.”
