Juice sold at Woolworths and Coles recalled over alcohol

A fruit juice has been pulled from shelves at Woolworths and Coles after alcohol was detected in the product labelled as a non-alcoholic drink. Sunraysia Prune Juice has been urgently recalled as it has been flagged potentially harmful and "may cause illness or injury if consumed", according to Food Standards Australia.

It is believed all one litre bottles with the best before date of December 4, 2025 were unintentionally fermented during the manufacturing process, resulting in alcohol being present.

The drink was available at both major supermarkets across NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. This means shoppers under the age of 18 as well as drivers could have purchased the drink in store and consumed it.

Shoppers have been advised to check any Sunraysia Prune Juice products and not consume any which fit the above description — instead they are being asked to visit their place of purchase and return the drink for a full refund.

Juice was available to minors and drivers

As the drink is sold as a non-alcoholic fruit juice it had no age restrictions, meaning minors had access to the product and may have unknowingly consumed it. In all states, the legal drinking age is 18 and any presence of alcohol must be clearly quantified on labels.

The fact that the manufacturer didn't realise the drink had fermented also means drivers could have consumed the fruit juice and unwittingly raised their blood alcohol concentration, which is required by law to be less than 0.05 in Australia.
