Jonathan Groff became 'obsessed' with Ncuti Gatwa on Doctor Who set

The Hamilton star absolutely loved getting his Bridgerton on with Ncuti Gatwa, and they even went to see Beyonce together.

Jonathan Groff immediately bonded with Ncuti Gatwa while filming the upcoming Regency era episode of Doctor Who. Their friendship was so strong that they even went to see Beyoncé together during filming.

Groff, who's best known for his roles in Hamilton and Glee, will portray the title character in the new episode: Rogue. The star describes his enigmatic character as "an alien bounty hunter and a man of mystery" who is not who he first seems to be.

It was certainly love at first sight between the 39-year-old star and Gatwa. Groff explained that the show's leading man and his co-star Millie Gibson were "both so warm and welcoming". But he had a special experience with Gatwa in particular.

"I spent most of my time with Ncuti and I am obsessed with him. I think he is such a star," said Groff.

"He's so unpredictable and thrilling to act with because you never see the same thing twice. He's so spontaneous, and yet so deeply connected to what he's doing. He really cares. He's really in it fully, and he's got this force and positivity that is completely unique to him. It's just phenomenal. I just adore him. I think he is one of the most exciting actors working today."

The bromance even stretched to another of Groff's obsessions when he discovered that his time filming in Cardiff coincided with Beyoncé bringing her Renaissance Tour to Wales.

He said: "I asked that I was off by 4pm so I could make it to the stadium. And I brought Ncuti with me. So we got to see the Renaissance Tour together and it was so much fun. Amazing."

The new episode, airing this weekend on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, takes the Doctor and Ruby back to 1813, where they're invited to a party thrown by the Duchess (Indira Varma). That's where they cross paths with Rogue, and discover a string of murders.

Groff jumped at the chance to work with Russell T Davies given that he was a huge fan of It's a Sin. But there was a small hurdle in that he'd never even seen a single episode of Doctor Who.

"Russell sent me about five episodes of Doctor Who from throughout the years, including the first episode that ever aired in black and white. So, I had a very quick crash course before I started," he admitted.

Groff is now firmly a part of the Doctor Who world and we can't wait to see what secrets Rogue has in store for us. Could we get another clue to the identity of the One Who Waits?

Even if there's nothing more to this than just an intriguing sci-fi story, it's very exciting to see what Doctor Who does with the world of Bridgerton. They've even drafted in Bridgerton dance choreographer Jack Murphy so that, when the cast took to the ballroom, it was as authentic as possible.

Doctor Who airs on Saturdays on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
