Lucky escape for two drivers after truck full of whisky collides in fiery crash

A truck carrying thousands of litres of whisky and bourbon has collided head-on with another truck near Coonalpyn, South Australia.

Both drivers were lucky to have walked away from the fiery crash with minor injuries.

Incredibly, the driver of the Melbourne-bound truck that was carrying a large quantity of alcohol has lived to tell the tale.

Just after 2.30am he collided head-on with a refrigeration B-double heading in the opposite direction on the Dukes Highway.

The booze truck spun around 180 degrees then flipped onto its side, triggering an intense blaze.

A 42-year-old Queensland truck driver was treated for leg injuries before being flown to the Flinders Medical Centre in a stable condition.

The other driver, a 31-year-old Victorian man, escaped with minor injures.

Firefighters stopped the flames spreading to 26,000 litres of Jim Beam and Canadian Club whisky that had spilled.

“Flames 10 metres into the air. There was not much metal in a truck cab, just a lot of fiberglass and the material that burns very, very well,” CFS fire fighter Mark Klitscher told 7 News.

“At the time we didn't know that it was so full of what it was, so just turned the foam up and got it on the hot stuff.”

News of the crash has prompted hundreds of comments on social media.

“Hopefully a Coke truck was following!” one person joked.

Another wrote: “You know what they say - you shouldn't mix drinks.”
