Heartbreaking note found on collar of Jack Russell wandering streets

A “sweet natured” dog found roaming the streets with a heartbreaking note attached to her collar has prompted calls for help from animal welfare authorities.

SPCA Auckland took to Facebook to appeal for assistance after finding Roxy, a female Jack Russell Terrier, wandering around shops in Howick on Tuesday.

Roxy was found with a green collar but it appears its owner has given the dog up.

“Hi my name is Roxy my owner can’t look after me can you?” the note attached to her collar reads.

SPCA posted pics of the little dog with the note in the hopes someone might recognise Roxy and be able to help.

“All information we receive will be treated as confidential,” the post reads.

“We understand that circumstances can change for pet owners, and that sometimes families are in a position where they genuinely can't care for their animals anymore - we want you to know there is always another option and people who can help.”

The post also notes that abandoning an animal “like this” is an offence under New Zealand’s Animal Welfare Act 1999.

SPCA also provided a link on advice for rehoming pets.

“Could be many reasons, let's not judge too quickly. Could be an elderly person who had no family or options and may be unwell. Little Roxy looks well cared for,” one user commented on the post.

SPCA noted Roxy was currently unavailable for adoption as the team investigates the situation.

“She is being very loved and cared for by our canine team in the meantime,” SPCA Auckland said.
