The 'ingenious' reason why this person has attached plastic bottles to their bin

A clever resident in Sydney’s south has placed plastic bottles on the lid of their garbage bin in an attempt to stop birds lifting the lid.

A woman shared pictures of the bin on a street in Menai to Facebook on Tuesday, with the caption: “Clever folks in Menai”.

But one man said he “didn’t get it”.

“What is this for?” he wrote.

That’s when an eagle-eyed viewer chimed in.

“To keep the cockatoos out of the bin and making a mess,” another man wrote.

It seems the Menai resident decided the best way to do this was to place two bottles on top to weigh the lid down and it’s impressed many.

“Bloody ripper,” one man wrote.

“Another great invention just like the Hills Hoist (clothesline).”

A woman added she’s tried the same idea and it “works great”.

“I stole the idea from my neighbours,” she wrote.

“Before we had it we no sooner turned around and started to walk inside and the cockatoos had it open and pulling everything out.”

Another woman added it’s a “necessity” if you live in the area “otherwise you end up with a front yard full of garbage”.

In other news involving geniuses and clever ideas, in January a driver took advantage of their Tesla’s unique feature to avoid a parking ticket.

A McDonald’s customer also figured out a hack using their fries container which blew people’s minds.

However, others were sceptical it wasn’t the intended purpose for the container.
