Incredible video captures giant tornado in Queensland sky

Queensland residents would have assumed they’d seen it all after extreme weather conditions over the last six months which have ravaged certain areas of the state.

But for the small town of Clifton, 150km southwest of Brisbane, there was further surprise after a landspout tornado appeared on the horizon during a storm.

Resident Sonia Handford captured the phenomenon on camera on Wednesday.

“The funnel reached extraordinarily high altitude before collapsing from the ground up, but after the collapse of the funnel, I witnessed the base still rotating for several moments afterwards,” she told Yahoo7 News.

“After filming it we were hit with extremely strong winds and almost an inch of rain that fell in less than 20 minutes.

“It was spectacular to watch.”

While landspout tornados appear near storms during intense updraft and can cause some damage, they are far less serious than actual tornados which form in a supercell thunderstorm, according to the US Severe Storms Laboratory.

There was minimal structural damage caused and no reported injuries from the landspout yet with further storm activity in the area predicted, more could appear.
