The incredible triple-0 call little boy made after his dad fell ill with meningococcal

A little Victorian boy’s triple-0 call to paramedics has been revealed after his father collapsed from meningococcal.

Marcus Pool was enjoying Friday night with his kids Phoenix, 8, and Winter Paget, 3, but when he woke up the following morning he couldn’t move.

Little Phoenix went to hug his father but knew something was wrong.

Upset, he frantically called his mother Amalie Paget telling her: “Daddy’s not making any sense”.

The eight-year-old then dialled triple zero.

He was asked by paramedics to get his father to smile or raise his arms above his head.

“Dad, can you raise both your arms above your head, like this?” he can be heard asking his father over the phone.

“Watch me. Can you do this? Dad, can you do this for me?”

“No, he’s not doing them,” Phoenix tells the operator.

The operator tells Phoenix the paramedics are coming “as quickly as they can”.

It’s not known what Mr Pool says next, but Phoenix says: “Thanks dad”.

“I’m so proud of you,” Mr Pool can be heard telling his son.

Paramedic Philippa Doggett came to Mr Pool’s aide, and noticed that little Winter had been sitting by her father’s bedside throughout the incident.

“She had actually spent the entire time while Phoenix had been talking on the phone with triple-0 waiting by Marcus’s side,” Ms Doggett said.

“The fact that she, at three, was able to stand by him and provide him a lot of support and comfort and to provide such a beautiful, calm energy in that room was just fantastic.”

It wasn’t until late Sunday the family were told Mr Pool had meningococcal septicaemia – a type of blood poisoning.

Ms Paget said the father has a long road ahead of him, “but he’s alive”.

“We’re so grateful for that,” she said.

“If Phoenix hadn’t made that call we wouldn’t have Marcus. He’d be dead.”

Mr Pool said his little boy saved his life.

“He’s absolutely my hero and I’m so proud of him,” he said.

“Hopefully I can pay him back over the years. I’m not sure how many Lego sets that will cost me though.”
