IGA store fined $45,000 after selling food past use-by date

A single IGA franchise has been fined a whopping $45,000 for multiple breaches, including selling food after its use-by date.

The store in Rockingham, WA, was found by the state’s Department of Health to have breached five food standards.

Between 20 June 2018 and 11 July 2018, the store failed to clearly identify food that was being held for disposal, failed to maintain the food premises to a standard of cleanliness, failed to maintain equipment to a standard of cleanliness and failed to maintain food premises in a good state of repair.

The IGA was also fined for selling out-of-date food.

Along with the $45,000 fine, store owner Adrian DeMattia was also ordered to pay $2218.30 in costs.

Mr DeMattia told The West Australian the issues were related to the deli section in particular, and said the problems have since been rectified.

“In the 17 years that we’ve been here that’s really the only time we’ve fallen backwards,” he said.
