Husband ordered to pay ex-wife $327,000 for 25 years of housework

Ivana Moral was awarded the staggering sum after her marriage broke down.

A woman’s record divorce settlement has been praised as a win for all women “in the shadows” after her ex-husband was ordered to hand over a staggering $327,000.

A Spanish judge has demanded Ivana Moral’s former spouse of 25 years deliver her the hefty sum as compensation for decades of unpaid housework, according to the ruling made public this week.

A celebrating Ms Moral told the i news website on Tuesday she had been left with nothing after she asked her ex, who has not been named, for a divorce in 2020, despite “all these years of putting all [her] time, energy and love in the family”.

During their marriage, the 48-year-old mum of two “exclusively” performed all of the house chores and often cleaned the family’s gym business, the ruling states, according to Euronews.

The judge also said Ms Moral was due the record payout since she “was deprived of any possible career due to her exclusive dedication to the home and family”, while her former husband had “exponentially increased his assets”.

'Everything was in his name'

After getting married in 1995, Ms Moral’s partner purchased a Porsche, a Range Rover, BMW motorbikes and a 70-hectare olive oil farm valued at $6.4 million with money from his popular gym business, i news reports.

Despite this, Ms Moral said she was excluded financially and when the couple’s eldest daughter turned 16, her former spouse refused to pay for her schooling.

“I was supporting my husband in his work and in the family as a mother and a father. I was never allowed access to his financial affairs, everything was in his name,” she told the publication.

Because they signed a separation of goods agreement when they got married, their subsequent divorce initially left Ms Moral with half their home but nothing else, despite still raising their youngest child.

The mum’s lawyer said the judge’s ruling “represents the labour of all the women in the shadows”.

The Є204,624.86 (A$327,366) payout was calculated based on the country’s minimum monthly wage. Her ex, who is expected to appeal, has also been ordered to pay his former wife $800 per month and $640 and $960 to their daughters.
