Husband accused of killing wife by 'shutting hot tub lid on her'

An allegedly drunk husband has been accused of closing the lid of a backyard hot tub, resulting in the death of his wife.

According to Chicago police, home security video shows Eric and Laura Huska drinking in the hot tub for some time before the 57-year-old victim unsuccessfully tried to get out.

It also shows the 57-year-old Eric Huska initially trying to help his wife, but then closing the tub’s lid.

Deputy Chief Todd Wolff told The Chicago Tribune the wife is seen in the video struggling against the cover. Eric Huska returns to the tub about 90 minutes later, opening the lid and finding his wife floating in the water.

“For whatever reason he put the cover over her head,” Deputy Chief Todd Wolff said.

“We are sure alcohol was a major factor.”

The Cook County medical examiner’s office determined she died by drowning by entrapment, Wolff said.

It’s understood Ms Huska’s distraught siblings were already grieving the death of their elderly mother just one week prior to the hot tub incident.

Huska appeared in court on Tuesday, when a judge set bail at $10,000. It was not immediately known if he has legal representation.
