'Desperate' search for two people after student's alleged hit-and-run death

The search is on for two people police wish to speak to after a young woman was killed in an alleged hit-and-run in Melbourne’s southwest.

Nisali Perera, 20, was crossing Wellington Road near Scenic Boulevard at Clayton on Thursday about 9.45pm when she was hit by a dark-coloured Mazda station wagon.

Ms Perera died at the scene and police alleged the driver of the car failed to stop.

Victoria Police Detective Inspector Stuart McGregor told reporters on Monday the car ran a red light.

The car was later found dumped at a property on North Road in Clayton about 11pm and was believed to be connected to the incident.

Det Insp McGregor said witnesses saw a man behind the wheel of the car.

Police wish to speak Shane Cochrane, a 37-year-old man from Bayswater, and Lauren Hindes, a 33-year-old from the Clayton area, as part of their investigation.

CCTV has also been released of the pair.

Det Insp McGregor said Ms Perera was leaving Monash University, where she was studying, when she was hit by the car.

“Her family are absolutely devastated,” he said.

“She was a kind and sociable person.”

He added she was from Sri Lanka and her parents lived there. She was an only child who also had family in Australia.

Det Inp McGregor said police were “desperately” seeking Mr Cochrane and Ms Hindes.

“We’ll continue to hunt until we find them and we will find them,” he said.
