Huge bull shark caught near popular water-skiing spot in NSW river

Two fishermen have landed a massive shark at a popular area for water sports on the Georges River in Sydney’s south west on Monday.

The men posed alongside the sizeable bull shark, prompting a warning from NSW Maritime urging those around the Picnic Point area to "take care out there".

“Caught this arvo half a kilometre down from picnic point on George’s River,” the men wrote alongside a photo of the shark.

While locals insist it’s not uncommon to find sharks lurking in the river, Georges River website claims “it’s an unusual occurrence”.

"The Georges River is one of Sydney's healthiest rivers, there are still some precautions to take before you swim,” the website states.

“In the warmer months, jellyfish can sometimes be found in large numbers in the Georges River. Whilst these are not dangerous, they can be annoying and cause minor discomfort.

“Whilst sharks have been sighted in the River, this is an unusual occurrence.”

However locals claim its “common knowledge” that the popular water-skiing spot is frequented by bull sharks.

“Why are people surprised that there are sharks in the river… I remember when we used to go boating up the river toward Georges Hall that we would spot fins in the water, if you live near the river you know sharks exist there,” one local wrote.

“Been Bull sharks down there forever! If you grew up in the area it was common knowledge,” another added.

Meanwhile a shark warning has now been issued for a popular beach on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula after a whale carcass was spotted in nearby waters.

Victoria's fishery authority warned the carcass at Jubilee Point, Sorrento could attract hungry sharks.

Beachgoers are being warned not to swim, especially if they have any bleeding wounds.
