The footage, released by police, captured the moment a trailer attached to a truck driving on Hopkins Hwy at Warrnambool began to fishtail.

The trailer is seen veering onto the wrong side of the road at the sharp bend near Spring Flat Rd intersection about 9.15am on Wednesday.

A 36-year-old man behind the wheel of an oncoming car was forced to take evasive action, leaving the road and colliding with a ditch.

A local man and his five-year-old Labradoodle were driving behind the trailer when the crash occurred but were not injured.

Police claim the driver of the truck did not stop following the incident, and are now appealing for help in identifying the truck.

Officers released dashcam footage of the incident on Friday in the hope someone might recognise the vehicle involved.
