A woman has made a terrifying discovery on a Queensland beach, with photos of her find sparking mass confusion online.

Not believed to be human, the long dead creature washed up on Long Beach in Keppel Sands, approximately 40km from Rockhampton earlier this month.

The woman who discovered it shared photographs of it on social media, confused as to what the skeleton once was.

“Wondering if anyone has any idea what it is or who I could possibly get to find out?” Bobbi-lee Oates said.

Many were quick to point out the creature’s human like features before this theory was ruled out by some internet sleuths.

Most commenters suggested it was a whale or dolphin, comparing its skull to those found in museums.

“My vote is cetacean. It looks like the head is turned backwards and the rostrum is buried in the sand,” one person said.

Many named the Queensland snub fin dolphin, which has less of a long snout than other dolphins.

One person hypothesised the body of an iconic Australian land animal had found its way to the ocean.

“The “tail” is one long bone not like a vertebrate which leaves me to believe that’s actually a leg, the ribs are thick and the animal is pretty furry so my guess this is a really mangled kangaroo,” the user commented.

Despite calls for Ms Oates to do so, a spokesperson for Queensland Police confirmed officers had not been called to examine the bizarre find.
