Law-abiding turkey filmed using zebra crossing to get across road

Why did the chicken cross the road? – To get to the other side.

Yes, it may be one of history’s lamest jokes, but sometimes birds really do need to cross the street to get where they’re going.

Hilarious footage posted to Dash Cam Owners Australia proves it, as a law-abiding bush turkey uses a zebra crossing on a busy road, halting traffic in both directions.

In the video, a car pulls up behind another at Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

The male and female are chatting when the woman can be heard saying, “What’s she doing?” as the car in front comes to a halt.

Suddenly, they both burst into laughter as a bush turkey comes into view, casually striding across the road.

“She’s stopped for the turkey!” the man cackles.

On the other side of the road, a white van also respectfully pulls up, allowing the bush turkey to pass while the couple in the other car continue to laugh hysterically.

“Animals have more road sense than motorcyclists,” one Facebook user commented after the footage was posted on Wednesday.

The video has since been liked by more than 3000 people and shared more than 840 times.

“Smarter than a lot of parents who do the afternoon school pickups,” another wit observed.

Others wondered why the dash cam driver found the idea of a woman stopping to let an animal cross the road so hilarious.

“What were they meant to do? Mow the animal down?,” they wrote.

But perhaps this observation misses the point.

The question remains: How did the turkey know what a zebra crossing is for in the first place?
