Hilarious twist after dog walker discovers 'human toe'

Police have made a hilarious discovery after a woman reported finding what she believed to be a dead body.

The woman was walking through a muddy field with her dog near Winlaton in northern England on Tuesday when she came across something sticking out of the ground.

She believed it was a human toe and Northumbria Police said her find sparked a “large-scale” investigation after the woman took a photo and sent it to them.

“The image did show what appeared to be a human foot and so a search of the field was conducted, involving our response officers and specialist police dogs,” police said.

However, it turns out the item wasn’t a toe at all.

In fact, it wasn’t even human.

“Eventually we tracked down the ‘scene’ only to discover the toe was in fact a potato with a mushroom growing next to it,” police said.

“Our search team did have a chuckle when they realised it was no more than a vegetable but the call was made in good faith.”

Police said they could only praise the woman’s vigilance and encouraged anyone who came across human remains to call them.

One woman wrote on Facebook she probably would have been fooled into believing the potato was a toe too.

“Close up it really does look like a toe,” one wrote.

Another woman said she would have “totally freaked” had she come across the vegetable while another added the story made her day.

“Bet the police officers were howling when they pulled it out,” another woman wrote.

“This has made me laugh. It does look like a toe though.”
