Heavily sedated mum may not know of daughter's death after crash tragedy

Just twelve days before Christmas Maddison Spyve and her mother, Tammy, had been crossing an intersection of Queensland’s Bruce Highway when the car they were in collided with a semi-trailer.

Maddison, 18, did not survive the tragedy at the intersection with Feluga Road at Feluga, south of Cairns, on December 13

Her mother remains in the intensive care unit in Cairns Hospital.

She is stable but critical and is still heavily medicated after suffering numerous serious injuries, including multiple broken bones to the right side of her body.

Tammy’s son and Maddison’s brother, Jayden Allwood, spent a few days sitting by his mother’s bed but flew back to where he lives in New South Wales for Christmas with his family.

His aunt is now by his mother’s side.

“Not a real lot has changed since the accident really. Still in a lot of pain,” Mr Allwood told Yahoo7.

Mr Allwood, 27, said his mother and sister lived together.

“She was everything to Mum. Mum worked two jobs just to help Maddi,” he said.

Mr Allwood said he flew up on the day of the crash and the doctors told his mother about the accident, but he was not sure if his mother remembers it at all.

It is thought Tammy may still be unaware of the loss of her beloved daughter.

“We can’t talk to her at the moment because of all the medication and sedation that she’s still on,” he said.

“I wouldn’t even call it [waking] up. It only lasts five or 10 seconds until she drifts back out of it.”

Talented sister with a ‘gorgeous smile’

He said his sister, who had just graduated from high school, was very special and won many awards for her musical talents.

“Every musical instrument she picked up she had a knack for,” Mr Allwood explained.

A fundraising page has already surpassed its $5000 goal and has so far raised more than $11,700 for Tammy’s recovery and for costs associated with Maddi’s funeral.

Many people have written on the page and remembered the teenager with great fondness.

“Maddi was so inspiring. She made me believe anything was possible,” a friend of the teenager’s wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Another person said they would miss her “gorgeous smile”.

“Maddi sang the National Anthem at the Bull & Bike Ride for us a few years ago and did an awesome job a beautiful voice,” a third person wrote.

‘Notorious’ crash spot

The fundraising page, set up by Sandal Hayes, describes the intersection where the crash occurred as “a notorious accident hotspot”.

Tammy’s son also wants to raise awareness about the hazards of the spot, saying this is not the first fatal crash he is aware of at this intersection.

“It got worse since they put the overtaking lane there, been near-misses and what-not as well,” Mr Allwood said.

“No more families should have to go through the pain of losing a loved one on that road.”

Tammy’s son also added he had been overwhelmed by the local community’s help and support through this incredibly difficult time.

“Knowing that everyone is there for mum now and knowing they’re going to be there when she gets out,” Mr Allwood said.
