Heatwave hits two states as mercury soars

Heatwave conditions are stretching across the country and sending temperatures soaring for residents in multiple states.

Warnings have been issued to residents of Western Australia and Victoria as a heatwave grips large swathes of the states.

Power outages were felt in parts of Perth over the weekend, including at a popular amusement park, as the mercury climbed to 42C.

A severe heatwave warning remains in place for the Kimberley, Gascoyne, Central West and Great Southern regions, with extreme conditions expected to blast some towns north of Carnarvon and in the far north of the state.

Perth is expected to reach 35C on Monday and the heat will linger until at least midweek with the city forecast to hit 39C on Thursday.

Victorians have been warned of a low-intensity heatwave that will impact most of the state on Monday, with a high of 35C on Melbourne.

Maximum temperatures will increase to the mid to high 30s on Tuesday before cooling to high teens to low 20s on Wednesday.

Overnight minimum temperatures in mid to high teens, increasing to high teens to low 20s on Monday night before reducing to low to mid teens from Tuesday night.

Severe heatwave will impact some locations, including Bairnsdale and Mallacoota.

Adelaide residents will also swelter through 38C heat on Monday, with high fire danger in the Mount Lofty Ranges.

The bureau has urged residents to stay vigilant during heatwave conditions, particularly high-risk groups including the elderly, babies, pregnant women and those with medical conditions.

“Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre,” the bureau warns.

“Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home.”

Hobart residents will get a pleasant start to the week with a high of 27C.

NT

Up to 40mm could fall in Darwin on Monday with a high of 31C.
