Grey's Anatomy star Jason George will be returning for season 21 following the cancellation of spinoff Station 19.

George has played Dr Ben Warren in both shows in the past, but he has most recently been a regular on Station 19, where his character had pursued his dream of being a firefighter.

Deadline reports George is now moving back to the ABC and Disney+ show for its new season, where Dr Ben will reunite with his wife Dr Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).

Dr Ben Warren originally debuted in Grey's Anatomy as a recurring character in season six, before joining full-time between seasons 12 and 14.

The character then moved to Station 19 alongside fellow Grey's Anatomy star Stefania Spampinato. The publication reports that Spampinato is not expected to return to Grey's Anatomy alongside George at this time.

The final season of Station 19 partially revolved around Dr Ben questioning whether he could continue as a firefighter after receiving a major shoulder injury.

His return to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital was foreshadowed in the final Station 19 episodes when Ben announced he'd be going back to complete his surgical residency.

The return of a familiar face on Grey's Anatomy follows the recent news that cast members Jake Borelli and Midori Francis are both leaving the series.

A time-slot shift for Grey's Anatomy has been confirmed for next year, with the show moving from its traditional 9pm slot on Thursdays to 10pm instead.

Legendary cast member James Pickens Jr, who plays Dr Richard Webber, has also hinted to Digital Spy that the wildfire in the season 20 finale will have a major impact on next season.

"We've got a big wildfire thing that's coming. How that's going to impact us moving with season 21. It's going to be true Grey's Anatomy, that's all I can tell you," he teased.

Grey's Anatomy season 20 and Station 19's final season aired on ABC in the US. Both shows stream on Disney+ in the UK, with season 21 of Grey's to air later this year.
