Grammys 2024 updates: All the winners as Taylor Swift makes history
The 2024 Grammy Awards took place on Sunday 4 February, with female artists dominating the major categories on a night dubbed ‘Year of the Women’.
Taylor Swift won Album of the Year for the fourth time, setting a new record. Song of the Year went to Billie Eilish for “What Was I Made For?”, while Record of the Year was won by Miley Cyrus for “Flowers”.
Earlier in the night, Swift took the opportunity to announce a brand new album, The Tortured Poets Department.
The ceremony’s live performances were also dominated by women, with legendary singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell drawing an emotional reaction and a standing ovation. Other performers included Dua Lipa and Tracy Chapman, who memorably dueted with Luke Combs on a duet version of her hit “Fast Car”.
SZA had led the nominations with nine nods, and ended up winning three.
As awards ceremonies go, this was a night that truly had it all. Even a surprise cameo from Meryl Streep...

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s liveblog for the Grammy Awards 2024!
It’s the big day, and we only have a short while until we get to find out who’s walking home with some of the biggest prizes in music.
It’s looking a lot like we could be in for another “Year of the Women”, 25 years after female artists including Celine Dion and Lauryn Hill famously dominated at the ceremony back in 1999.
SZA, the most-nominated singer at this year’s awards show, came close to matching Hill’s record-breaking run with nine nominations, while artists including Victoria Monet, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Janelle Monae and Lana Del Rey are also vying for the night’s top awards.
Who will win? As always, that’s anybody’s guess. You can find my predictions right here:

From Taylor Swift to Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey: The full list of Grammy Awards 2024 nominations
Sunday 4 February 2024 08:30 , Roisin O'Connor
The Grammy Awards could be in for another “Year of Women” at this year’s ceremony, after female artists swept the board of nominations in a number of the top categories.
SZA, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo are all up for Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year Category.
Four songs from Barbie: The Album were nominated for the Best Song Written for Visual Media category, with the favourite track “I’m Just Ken”, sung by Ryan Gosling, getting a nomination.
Swift has broken the record for being the most-nominated artist for the Song Of The Year category, with her bop “Anti-Hero” bringing her back into that category for another year and overtaking Paul McCartney and Lionel Richie, who were previously the most-nominated in that category.
And since Swift was nominated for Album of the Year, she’s on track to make history as the only artist ever – male or female – to win four times, since the singer is currently tied with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.
Take a look at the nominations in full:

From an iconic no-pants look to disco-ball chic, Taylor Swift’s most unforgettable red carpet looks
Sunday 4 February 2024 08:40 , Roisin O'Connor
At this point, Taylor Swift’s icon status isn’t up for debate. The 34-year-old Grammy winner could step out in a pair of leggings and make a statement (she has). As “mother” to many, Swift is praised for her multiplatinum-selling ballads and her bold reputation – especially on the red carpet.
Between dazzling cues to unreleased music and an affection for a Midnights blue, the “Anti-Hero” singer’s style sense personifies her. Her style doesn’t follow trends, it encapsulates her individuality (with a lot of sparkle). And like her music, Swift’s fashion is an ode to her many eras.
Since her 2006 red carpet debut for the Country Music Television Awards, the “Fifteen” artist has stunned in front of flashing cameras in long, Folklore-esque gowns, patterned dresses, and sophisticated suit sets. Now, as the 2024 Grammys approach, eager fans await Swift’s arrival, placing bets on what the heroine might wear.
In the meantime, we’ve plucked Swift’s best red carpet looks from the past 18 years of her stardom.

Trevor Noah, the charismatic presenter hosting the Grammys for the fourth year running
Sunday 4 February 2024 10:30 , Roisin O'Connor
The 2024 Grammy Awards will welcome Trevor Noah back to host the biggest night in music for the fourth consecutive year.
The former Daily Show star will return to the Grammys stage on Sunday (4 February) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Noah’s return comes in the wake of Jo Koy’s calamitous hosting job at the 2024 Golden Globes, in which he made a joke about Taylor Swift that elicited a steely look from the pop star herself.
The 39-year-old South African comedian, however, is likely to fare much better, not least because he’s already well-known by the A-list stars expected to attend the ceremony.

Will Travis Kelce be at the Grammys with Taylor Swift?
Sunday 4 February 2024 11:31 , Roisin O'Connor
Sad news, TnT fans, Travis Kelce will not be at the Grammys with Taylor Swift.
On Wednesday 31 January, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end spoke on The Pat McAfee Show , where he opened up about his relationship with the singer and how much he wishes he could be her date at the awards show.
“It’s exciting for me, but it’s all brand new, man,” Kelce told the talk show host about the increased spotlight from his relationship. “From having the paparazzi follow me every single day into work, to just everybody having my name on their talk show every single day, whether it’s sports, whether it’s not sports, you know, it’s just been a crazy, crazy ride I could have never anticipated.”
“But I’m having fun with it,” he added. “The majority of the world is having fun with it... All the cranky NFL fans, we’re slowly bringing them in.”
Swift has attended Kelce’s football games starting in September, going on to attend a total of 12 games, with the Super Bowl marking her 13th. Following the team’s win against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday 28 January, the Grammy winner was attempting to quietly leave M&T Bank Stadium to head to an after-party to celebrate the Chiefs and Travis Kelce’s win when a fan noticed her and shouted, “You did that s**t!”

The 2024 Grammy Awards are almost here, as the Recording Academy prepares for the biggest night in music. Much like every year, only some nominated musicians will be taking home the coveted prizes for Album of the Year or Song of the Year. However, not everyone will be leaving empty handed.
For the 25th year in a row, Los Angeles-based marketing company Distinctive Assets will be handing out luxury gift bags to presenters and performers, including Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and returning host Trevor Noah. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 2024 Grammys gift bags are valued at $36,000 and include a variety of lavish products inside.

What is Morgellons disease, the mysterious and controversial condition Joni Mitchell claims she has?
Sunday 4 February 2024 13:01 , Roisin O'Connor
Joni Mitchell is expected to make her first-ever Grammys performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards on Sunday 4 February. The Canadian singer-songwriter, 80, has made only a handful of live performances after she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015.
Following her hospitalisation in 2015, much attention was placed on Mitchell’s rare condition – which she has spoken candidly about in the past – known as Morgellons disease. The little-known skin condition is characterised by patients as having biting and stinging sensations under the skin. However, the controversial condition has raised eyebrows among the medical community, many of who believe that its symptoms are caused by a psychiatric disorder.

Taylor Swift’s table buddy for the 2024 Grammy Awards has been announced.
The 34-year-old “Style” vocalist will attend the 66th annual ceremony at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on 4 February. While fans were hoping for Swift and her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, to make their red-carpet debut there, the NFL tight end can’t accompany her. Kelce will be occupied at practice before Super Bowl LVIII the following Sunday.
Though we can’t expect a Travis and Taylor table moment, the spot next to the “Anti-Hero” artist has been filled by a broken-hearted ballad-singing icon like her. On 1 February, CBS posted a seating teaser on TikTok, revealing where Swift would be sat during the show.

Janelle Monáe, The Age of Pleasure review: A frothy, horny ode to erotic delight
Sunday 4 February 2024 16:31 , Roisin O'Connor
“As if recorded off the edge of an infinity pool, this tight collection of 14 tracks – many of them brief, lush interludes – embraces laidback cool while endlessly calling back to the pioneers of Black soul,” critic Adam White wrote of Janelle Monae’s Grammy-nominated album, The Age of Pleasure.
Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeats titan Fela, supplies shimmering brass on the braggadocious “Float”. “Champagne S***” is a mélange of marching band horns and dancehall synths. Grace Jones rocks up, cooing in French (“Trouble, trouble, trouble,” she purrs) before peacing out. “Lipstick Lover” bounces on a vintage reggae groove.

Lana Del Rey review, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd: Alluring, introspective and a little long

“I’d go on a seven-minute rant with a repetitive melody,” Lana Del Rey recently told Billie Eilish in an interview about her writing process for Did You Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. Indeed, many of the songs on her newly released ninth album do fit that description. They are long and can be repetitive, but truly, a rant has never sounded so alluring.

Billie Eilish and British pop star Kylie Minogue were among the stars to scoop early Grammys during the pre-telecast ceremony.
The 66th annual ceremony is taking place at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles, with the main ceremony presented by Trevor Noah. This marks the comedian’s fourth consecutive year of hosting duties.
Eilish and her brother, producer and co-writer Finneas O’Connell appeared onstage to accept the Best Song Written for Visual Media for their hit single “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie album.
The US pop star said she was “in awe” and “grateful every second of my life” for the recognition she has received over the years.
“I am shocked,” the 22-year-old said, also taking time to thank Barbie director Greta Gerwig and producer/star Margot Robbie for allowing her to make a song that “saved [her] a little bit”.
Minogue was also honoured for Best Pop Dance recording for hit “Padam Padam”, which went viral last summer.

Hello! How’s everyone doing? I have snacks up the wazoo, including some US-appropriate chocolate-covered pretzels (I got them from my local Lidl in Kent, go figure). Meanwhile, my colleague Tom is in the much-more appropriate LA, where the Grammys are ACTUALLY well underway as stars arrive on the red carpet. We just heard from the wonderful Noah Kahan, who I spoke with at the end of last year as he was about to make his debut on Saturday Night Live. You might expect he’d be overwhelmed by the sudden rush of fame, helped not least by the viral success of his hit single “Stick Season”. But he’s taking it all in his stride - he told me last year that he’s basically been dreaming about this his whole life.

A brief but fun chat with Dua Lipa on the AP red carpet livestream just now, with congratulations offered for her Song of the Year nomination, “That’s what I aim to do, to keep people dancing.”
Dua Lipa famously called out former Grammys CEO Neil Portnow for claiming women needed to “step up” in order to win awards, after a male-dominated ceremony in 2018.
“It’s just wonderful to see so many women at the top and so many incredible women nominated. I think what we want is just an equal space in the industry, not just on the creative side but on the business side. So hopefully equality in the industry will level out a bit, we’re getting there slowly. Baby steps.”

From SZA to Taylor Swift, our Grammys predictions for the Big Four categories
Sunday 4 February 2024 23:01 , Roisin O'Connor
The Grammys manage to annoy music fans most years, but last year’s ceremony caused a particularly big stink. This was mostly due to British pop star Harry Styles walking off with the night’s biggest prize, beating Adele and Beyoncé to Album of the Year in what should have been a rematch following the “Hello” artist’s controversial win over her fellow chart-topper in 2017.
This year is shaping up to be less provocative in many ways, with female artists dominating the Big Four categories (newly whittled down to eight instead of 10 nominees) including Song of the Year and Album of the Year. SZA leads the pack with nine nominations, while boygenius (who recently announced they would be going on hiatus at an acoustic show earlier in the week) and Victoria Monét follow close behind. Recording Academy darling Taylor Swift is also in the mix, and on the cusp of becoming the first-ever four-time Grammy winner for Album of the Year.
Ahead of the ceremony on Sunday (4 February), which will be hosted live from Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, here’s a look at who will probably win – and who should win – the Big Four.

boygenius are off to a superb start with three early Grammy wins

“What the hell?”
Phoebe Bridgers was stunned as she and her boygenius bandmates, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, scooped three Grammy Awards before the main ceremony had even started, for their critically adored debut album, the record.
The trio picked up the gongs for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance for their hit single “Not Strong Enough”, as well as the Best Alternative Music Album award for The Record.
After they won best rock song, Baker said: “All I ever wanted to do was be in a band. I feel like music is the language I used to find my family.”
Bridgers added: “I owe these boys everything, I love you guys so much, you’re the best.”
Following their third win, the stunned trio returned to the stage with Bridgers saying: “What the hell.”
She added: “This is so incredible, we’re just screaming backstage - it’s just been a constant scream.”

Taylor Swift cracks up at NFL joke
Monday 5 February 2024 01:48 , Roisin O'Connor
Watch and learn, Jo Koy!
Trevor Noah just made a joke about Taylor Swift and the attention her romance with Travis Kelce has received from sports fans.
“I think it is so unfair how NFL fans have been complaining about the cameras panning to Taylor Swift, like she’s controlling the cameras at the game. Just let her live,” Noah said.
“In fact, tonight, on Taylor’s behalf, you know what I’m going to do? I’m gonna give her a break. Every time they mention Taylor Swift, I’m gonna get revenge. Every time someone says Taylor Swift, I’m gonna cut the cameras to someone who played football, that’s what I’ll do. Cut!”
As Noah yelled “cut”, the cameras switched to Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Terry Crews who played as a defensive end and linebacker in the NFL for years before retiring and pursuing a career as an actor.
“Oh yeah, you like that Terry Crews?” Noah continued as a totally bemused Crews looked around. “You better fix your face Terry!” Noah shouted.

“Okay this is my 13th Grammy. Which is my lucky number... if I’ve ever told you that,” she said in her acceptance speech.

OK, I called it. Billie Eilish took home Song of the Year for “What Was I Made For?”, her contribution to the Barbie soundtrack, and is one step closer to that “Best Song” Oscar...
The 22-year-old singer saw off tough competition from music titans - Taylor Swift, SZA, Miley Cyrus, Lana Del Rey, Jon Batiste, Dua Lipa and Olivia Rodrigo - to claim the top prize.
After picking up the award, which honours songwriting, a shocked Eilish said: “Wow, oops, yikes, oh my god. Damn that’s stupid!”
She praised her fellow nominees as “incredible people, incredible artists, incredible music”.
Eilish also thanked the director of the Barbie blockbuster Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year”, with the video cutting over to show Swift nodding in agreement.

Phoebe Bridgers: Ex-Grammy Awards CEO Neil Portnow can 'rot in piss'
Monday 5 February 2024 05:18 , Tom Murray in Los Angeles
Asked about the “Year of Women” at the Grammys, Bridgers says: “Yeah, I have something to say about women.”

“He’s now being sued for sexual assault,” she points out. “I know he’s not dead yet but when he is, he can rot in piss.”
Last year, the former president and CEO of the Recording Academy – the organisation that produces the Grammy Awards – was accused of rape in a lawsuit.
Mr Portnow, who stepped down as the CEO in 2019, has denied the allegations. In a statement given to The Independent, his spokesperson called the allegations “completely false” and “undoubtedly motivated by Mr Portnow’s refusal to comply with the Plaintiff’s outrageous demands for money and assistance in obtaining a residence visa for her”.

What is Joni Mitchell’s mysterious illness Morgellons disease?
Monday 5 February 2024 07:35 , Tom Murray
Following her hospitalisation in 2015, much attention was placed on Mitchell’s rare condition – which she has spoken candidly about in the past – known as Morgellons disease. The little-known skin condition is characterised by patients as having biting and stinging sensations under the skin. However, the controversial condition has raised eyebrows among the medical community, many of who believe that its symptoms are caused by a psychiatric disorder.
In 2010, Mitchell described her Morgellons disease symptoms in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Mitchell described seeing “fibres in a variety of colours protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral” and suggested the illness was “as if it’s from outer space”.

Jay-Z calls out the Grammys never awarding wife Beyoncé with Album of the Year
Monday 5 February 2024 09:30 , Nicole Vassell
Jay-Z earned a point on the unofficial Good Husband scoreboard when he used his acceptance speech to acknowledge Beyoncé’s Grammy-win record, despite never receiving the Album of the Year accolade.
The rapper took to the stage with their 12-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy, to accept the Dr Dre Global Impact Award on Sunday, and noted the discrepancies in his wife’s Grammys recognition.
“Obviously it’s subjective because, you know, it’s music, and it’s opinion-based, but some things... I don’t want to embarass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year!” he said.
“So even by your own metrics, that doesn’t work. Think about that. The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn’t work. Some of you are gonna go home tonight and feel like you’ve been robbed. Some of you may get robbed. Some of you don’t belong in the category. Nah, nah, nah. When I get nervous I tell the truth!”

COMMENT: The 2024 Grammys proved a true celebration of women in music (and atoned for Harry Styles)
Monday 5 February 2024 11:30 , Nicole Vassell
Music critic Mark Beaumont said that this year’s Grammys atoned for previous years that left women under-rewarded, with Taylor Swift’s historic Album of the Year win, and SZA leading this year’s nominations among the achievements.
“Whether it was boygenius proving themselves the assembling Avengers of alt-country pop, Olivia Rodrigo turning new generations on to gnarly melodic rock or Lana Del Rey cementing her position as the queen of sultry sepia torch songs that forget to stop after the last chorus and drift pleasantly along for another four minutes, women have undeniably produced the most vital mainstream music of the past 12 months,” he wrote.
“And, rather than a brief Twitter-friendly rebalance on the part of the Grammys, it feels as though a genuine cultural sea change is underway.”
