Gold Coast restaurant under fire over 'disturbing' fries

A Gold Coast restaurant has come under fire for naming its waffle cut fries “Schindler’s List”.

Nobbys Arc at Nobby’s Beach has removed the “Schindler’s List” waffle cut fries from its menu after a customer complained. News Corp reports the complaint came from a Jewish woman named Lisa who was visiting from Melbourne.

Schindler’s List is a 1993 film about the Holocaust.

“I cannot express how disturbed, uncomfortable and in plain shock we were both in after reading the menu,” Lisa told News Corp.

“I asked to speak with the manager and explained to her how inappropriate it is to name a dish after the film.”

The manager apologised to the customer and has told Yahoo7 the item has been taken off the menu which will now be reprinted.

The fries were among other items on the menu named after movies including Pulp Fiction and Godfather.

Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dr Dvir Abramovich said the use of the Schindler’s List movie title on the menu was “insensitive”.

The restaurant’s management told Yahoo7 in a statement, a review was undertaken with the decision to remove the item from the menu.

“Post review of the issue over the weekend we have made the decision to take the name off the menu and new menus will be re-printed,” management said.

“We would like to add at no time did we look to offend anyone and the intent of the name on the menu may have been taken out of context.

“Fries are popular menu item so we named our four fries after four movies that are popular classics.”
