Girl, 6, becomes youngest Australian to reach Mount Everest Base Camp

A six-year-old Queensland girl has become the youngest Australian to reach Mount Everest Base Camp.

Little Maya Bristow, from Cairns, did the trek of a lifetime with her parents who are seasoned adventurers.

It shows the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, with Maya ticking the walk off her bucket list before her seventh birthday.

“It was pretty easy for me,” Maya said.

The first thing Maya did once reaching the base camp was snap icicles off a glacier, saying “it’s pretty cool because you don’t get icicles in Cairns”.

Maya’s achievement has been sent to Guinness World Records for confirmation.

The six-year-old’s mum, Catherine Lawson, said Maya inspires “other little kids to dream big and have adventures”.

“Maya’s a good role model for other kids,” she said.

The walk to base camp is 62 kilometres and can take nine days, with walkers reaching an elevation of 5000 metres.

The walk out is four more days, but that didn’t deter the pint-sized explorer.

“The hours didn’t really bother me because there was so much to see and do,” she said.
