'Safety highest priority': Hundreds of schools closed due to bushfire risk
NSW is facing what could be the most dangerous bushfire week in Australia’s history with hundreds of schools closing ahead of catastrophic and unprecedented conditions.
A catastrophic fire danger rating - the highest possible level - is in place for the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter and Illawarra Shoalhaven areas.
Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said in a statement, “safety remains the number one priority”.
“If it is not safe to travel to school please do not attend and inform your school,” she said.

“We will continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and work with emergency services to operate our schools safely. Further school closures may occur throughout the week.”
Hundreds of schools and a few TAFE campuses throughout NSW will remain closed on Tuesday while a number in Queensland also won’t open their doors.
