Friends remember 'kind hearted' P-plater who died in 'high speed' Geelong crash

Friends have paid tribute to "kind hearted" P-plater Richard Lander who died in a horror high speed crash in North Geelong.

The 24-year-old Grovedale driver died at the scene while his passenger, a 20-year-old Hamlyn Heights man, was airlifted the Alfred Hospital with critical head injuries.

Police believe the silver Holden sedan careened across the median strip to the wrong side of the road and crossed two lanes of traffic before striking a pole on Ballarat Road, near Kendall Close just after 1am on Friday.

"Quite significant speed has been a factor in the cause of this collision," Inspector Michael Baker told 7 News.

Friends have remembered Mr Lander as a "kind hearted" young man, as they shared their condolences on social media.

"Not the news I wanted to wake up too today..... Rest easy Richard Lander! 💔😪," one friend wrote. "Thinking of your family and friends at this tough time. xxx"

Another will miss his old housemate who he said "was one of the best mates I have ever had".

"We used to do everything together lived together partied together. This news has shocked us all. Richo so many memories rest in peace man. :(" he wrote.

"Rest easy Richard Lander. You were very kind hearted and a lovely friend. Sending love to all hes [sic] family ❤" another friend shared.

A school friend recalled the "good times" he had with Mr Lander. "Rest easy up there mate," he commented.

The exact cause of the crash is being investigated.

Victoria's road toll now stands at 179,29 more than this time last year.
