Fresh charges for alleged paramedic killer
The man accused of murdering NSW paramedic Steven Tougher has been charged with a string of new offences.
The 29-year-old father of two was allegedly stabbed to death in the back of his ambulance while on a lunch break at Campbelltown McDonald’s in Sydney’s southwest about 5.30am on April 14.
He married his wife Maddison two months before, and she gave birth to their daughter, Lily-Mae Stevie Tougher, a month after his death.
Jordan Fineanganofo, 22, was charged with his murder.
He was refused bail and his matter remains before the courts.
Police arrested Mr Fineanganofo was arrested again by police on July 27, over a series of incidents that allegedly occurred in suburbs surrounding Campbelltown – including Blair Athol, Ingleburn and Raby – in the hours leading up to the alleged stabbing.
They are unrelated to Mr Tougher’s alleged murder.
His death rocked the national healthcare community who raised concerns over their right to feel safe while at work.
Mr Tougher’s father Jeff was commended for his outspokenness in the wake of his son’s sudden death as he called for stronger penalties for those who assault emergency services workers.
His son was remembered for a life dedicated to the service of others, and a lifelong dream of becoming a paramedic, of which he finally achieved just a year before his life was cut short.
“It was clear from a young age what was Steven’s calling,” his father said during a public memorial to honour Mr Tougher.
He described the moment an eight-year-old Steven put pamphlets in his neighbours letterboxes saying: “If you need help, call Steven.”
More than $400,000 was raised to support the paramedic’s wife and two young children.
Mr Fineanganofo was remanded in custody and charged with common assault, destroy or damage property, armed with intent, two counts of attempted wounding with intent, and stealing.
He will face Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday.
