Four-year-old boy injured in mountain lion attack

A little boy has been hospitalised after he was attacked by a mountain lion.

The boy, 4, was hiking with 10 other people at the Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve in San Diego County on Monday, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The department added it’s not clear how he came to be attacked by the big cat but his injuries were consistent of those caused by a mountain lion. He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

“While the wildlife officers were conducting their investigation at the scene, they identified mountain lion tracks,” the department said in a statement.

“Very shortly thereafter and in the same area, a mountain lion approached the officers. The lion appeared to have little fear of humans, which is abnormal behaviour for a mountain lion.”

The lion was euthanised.

The department is now analysing the boy’s clothes along with the cat’s carcass.
