Mum’s screams after son shot dead by police
A man has been shot dead by police after allegedly stabbing his father and then lunging at officers with a knife.
Police were responding to reports of a stabbing at a home in Grange, Brisbane about 2.15pm on Sunday, when the 29-year-old First Nations man allegedly lunged at officers with a knife.
Footage captured the moment his mother arrived at the home and discovered her son was dead.
“They shot him. They shot my son,” she was heard screaming, 9 News reported.
Police received a call reporting that a man was armed with a knife and was attempting to stab a man known to him, Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham told reporters on Sunday.
When two officers arrived on the scene, they located the young man holding a knife and his 53-year-old father suffering from a deep laceration to his hand and a shoulder injury.
Four more officers were called for backup before police allege the 29-year-old moved towards officers while holding the knife.
“That man lunged at police with what we believe is a knife which resulted in a uniformed officer dispensing three shots into that person,” Superintendent Massingham said.
Paramedics worked to revive the man but he was declared dead at the scene.
The 53-year-old man was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
There were a large number of family present who were at the scene in the moments after the incident.
“This is indeed a tragic afternoon for the family,” Superintendent Massingham said.
He went on to add that the police force’s thoughts are “with the First Nations community”.
The officer who allegedly fired the three shots has served in the force for just three years and will now be subject to the questioning of the Ethical Standards Command.
“To phone the police and then unfortunately our officers being confronted in a position where they see it fit to use a level of force that will cause harm or death,” Superintendent Massingham said.
“That is not a decision anyone takes lightly.”
A crime scene was declared at the home and police investigations are continuing.
Police bodycam video of the incident will be reviewed during the course of the investigation and will be subject to review by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
