Former President Donald Trump took time out of his hush money trial to play golf with Tony Romo

Donald Trump’s defense rested its case after calling just two witnesses − neither of them named Donald Trump − in the former president’s historic criminal hush money trial on Tuesday.

Trump had initially said he would testify in his defense, but subsequently backed out. The Republican presidential candidate said he could not testify because of a gag order restricting his potentially intimidating attacks on witnesses and jurors, but Judge Juan Merchan made clear that this did not preclude Trump taking the stand.

But as his hush money trial took the weekend off, the former president hit the golf course with former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS Sports NFL broadcaster Tony Romo.

On Saturday, video posted on social media appeared to show Trump and Romo taking swings at a golf course in Dallas. Trump was in the area to speak at a National Rifle Association convention. At the event, Trump confirmed his round of golf with the former Cowboys quarterback.

“I played golf today with a really good golfer: Tony Romo. Do you know Tony Romo?” Trump said as the crowd cheered. “He may be a better golfer than a football player. I don’t know.”

Romo has been an avid golfer since he retired from the NFL in 2017, competing in several tournaments, including in a U.S. Open local qualifier in 2023. He recently played in the 2024 Invited Celebrity Classic in April.

In February, Romo worked Super Bowl 58 as an analyst for CBS alongside play-by-play man Jim Nantz.

Trump frequently plays golf, and he has several courses throughout the world through Trump Golf.
