'I couldn't believe it': Teen refused entry at school dance for 'questionable' outfit

A 17-year-old student has been refused entry to her high school dance because her jumpsuit didn’t meet the event’s dress code.

“My daughter was just denied entrance because her dress attire has a crotch in it,” Melissa Krueger wrote on Facebook on September 28.

Her daughter, Darcy, was stopped at the door to her senior year dance and told her outfit clashed with the dress code, which was described as “semi-formal attire for young ladies”.

“Tell me this isn’t semi formal attire... feeling awful,” Ms Krueger said.

Darcy was looking forward to attending the dance which US morning TV show Today reported was organised for students who attend home school in the Tampa Bay, Florida area for $75 per head.

According to CNN, the dress code “advised females to plan to dress conservatively”, which Darcy and her mother thought they had complied with – choosing a long, black formal pantsuit, accessorised with silver heels and a necklace.

"Dresses that expose a plunging neckline or backlines are NOT appropriate. You will not be allowed in if your dress is questionable," the dress code read.

Darcy was looking forward to the event and was told she could only attend if she returned wearing a dress, which Darcy told Fox 8 was “surprising” as the woman who turned her away at the door was wearing pants.

"I was very surprised, I called my mum and I was telling my friends about it because I couldn't really believe it," Darcy said.

When Ms Krueger posted her daughter’s story on Facebook, social media erupted with most people coming to the teenager’s defence.

“Why box girls into wearing dresses? Who says girls cannot wear dressy pants? It’s stereotyping and you would think an educator would frown upon that,” one person responded.

“The school definitely need to modify their dress code, absolutely nothing wrong with her attire,” another person wrote.

"It's like an injustice... she could have went to any semi-formal event in the area and walked right in and no one would have batted an eye," Ms Krueger told ABC Action News.

Local photographer Jennie Ellis heard about the incident and offered to take photos of Darcy in the jumpsuit that caused so much controversy.

“She is strong and confident and it was a privilege to be able to capture her on camera,” Ms Ellis wrote.

“Well, let’s hope Darcy gets a modelling contract with these beautiful pics and attention! She looks absolutely incredible, and is stunning from the inside and out!” one person responded to the photos.
