Fires Burn in Paris Migrant Camp Ahead of Evacuation

Paris police evacuated around 2,000 people from a migrant camp in the northern suburb of Saint Denis on November 17, the French interior minister, Gerald Darmanin, said.

Darmanin said the people living in the camp were experiencing “deplorable sanitary conditions.”

Camp residents were mostly asylum seekers, Le Monde reported. The migrants would be moved to reception centers in the greater Paris area, France 24 said.

The NGO France Terre d’Asile welcomed the move as “essential” and “long awaited.”
