Fears sparked after pet owners find suspicious meat in bag

Meat in a bag found in a suburban neighbourhood has sparked fears burglars have been baiting guard dogs as part of a vile plan to make robbing homes easier.

A woman living in the Bentley Park area, 9km south of Cairns City, claimed her dog almost became a victim last Friday, when she found a package of white meat bound by string inside two freezer bags.

She said the meat was cut into four strips, with two pieces wrapped in fluorescent twine. She was able to rip it from her dog’s mouth just in time.

“We were particularly lucky to catch our dog with the bag in her mouth as she hadn’t yet broken the bag or ingested any of the meat,” the woman wrote to a Facebook community group warning others.

The woman reported the incident to police and took the bag of meat to the vet, who said her dog would certainly have been killed if she’d ingested the twine.

“The vet also advised us that in some cases broken glass is often found within the meat. The chance of poison is also real,” she said.

“The Police agreed that could have been an isolated incident, or it could be part of a larger action possibly thieves targeting for future home invasions.”

Several others revealed they too had experienced similar threats within the community, with dog baiting and death prior to a home robbery being consistent themes.

“My uncle lost his dog a few weeks ago. She had a horrific death… RIP BELLA….The next night he was broken into. The dog was baited on a Friday also almost a month ago,” social media user Kel Byl said.

Another woman, Trish Foley, said nearby suburb Mt Sheridan had “three homes’ dogs die from sausages with poison thrown in the yard” which she speculated was robbers targeting families with dogs who barked a lot.

Local resident, Renee Stiles, also recalled one of her friends’ children nearly consuming “bait” that had been thrown into her yard.
