Father opens letterbox to find stranger's 'random act of kindness'

A Queensland father has been pleasantly surprised after opening his mailbox to find a kind note along with $20.

The note, from an anonymous person, was shared on Reddit by user mdclear.

“Hello, this is a random act of kindness,” the note reads.

“I think this $20 would be of more benefit to you than it is to me. All I ask is that maybe one day you do an act of kindness for someone else.”

The Reddit user, a father-of-four based in Nambour on the Sunshine Coast, found it in his mailbox on Thursday.

He told Yahoo7 he was “quite surprised” by the find, which he believed was hand-delivered.

“I tried to think if it was someone I know,” the father said.

“I used it on activity books and pencils for the kids. They had been asking all week for some.”

He said while some people did not believe the note was real, he hopes one day those who are doubtful will “receive something like this that will change their mind”.

The father added there was normally a lot of scepticism on the internet “especially sites like Reddit”.

The picture has been flooded with comments on the site with many responding in different ways to the note.

“Far out, your house must look pretty rough to elicit random donations,” one user wrote.

One user asked him if he needed the “twenty bucks”, to which the father replied, “Nope but the kids enjoyed it.”

“So apparently you look like the kind of guy who needs $20. How do you feel about that?” another wrote.

However, others were sceptical.

“I can’t be the only one who thinks this is a little weird and creepy? Why not just hand it to a bum on the street?” one user wrote.

Another added: “It’s clearly fake”.

However, the father responded, saying: “It’s most definitely not a fake”.

“I posted because it’s great that people do this,” he wrote.

“Some people still have time in their lives to think of others.”

Some were more optimistic though.

“Awesome. Hope you will pay it forward one day,” one user wrote.

“I most definitely will,” the father said.

The Queensland father isn’t the only one to receive a kind note.

In July, a couple stricken by drought in NSW were moved when they found a random note in their letterbox containing $400.

The cash was left with a note saying: “A gift to tide you over (maybe).”

Last year, the owners of a sheepdog were surprised when they discovered their pup with a note claiming he was a hero for saving another dog.

The note read “Louie is the hero of the day”.

“He led me to Maddy in distress stuck under a branch pile. Cheers, Rob.”

The family decided to call Rob – a farmer who lives 1.6km away – to find out more information.
